SpeedCompass – Privacy Policy & Legal Notice

for the SpeedCompass app · Deutsche Fassung

Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 11, 2026

The app “SpeedCompass” processes your trip data on your device: trips, vehicles and settings are not transmitted to SimpleCrafts Studio and not passed on to third parties. If Android device backup is switched on, Android backs them up to your Google account (section 3). There are no user accounts and no analysis of your usage behaviour. The app connects to the internet for the advertising it displays (section 8) and – only if you explicitly enable it – for crash reports (section 9). See section 8 for details.

2. What data is processed and why

Location data (GPS): While the app is open or a trip is being recorded, the app determines your location to display the current speed and direction of travel and to calculate the distance, duration, average and maximum speed of a trip. This processing happens in real time on the device.

The app determines your location via Android’s location services (Google Play services). If Google Location Accuracy is switched on, Google processes data such as Wi-Fi and mobile network information under its own terms; this is a system setting of your device, and SimpleCrafts Studio receives no data from it.

Motion and orientation sensors (magnetometer, accelerometer): They are used to calculate the compass direction. These sensors do not provide personal data and do not require any special permission.

3. Storage on the device

Recorded trips (trip log/logbook) are stored locally in a database on your device – each with date, duration, distance, average and maximum speed and, if enabled, the estimated fuel consumption. Only these summarised figures are stored, never the full route or individual waypoints. Your settings and vehicle profiles are also stored locally.

If Android device backup is switched on, Android backs up the app’s trip database and settings to your Google account (Google Drive). SimpleCrafts Studio has no access to this; the backup is managed solely by Android and Google and can be switched off in the Android settings. If you export or share trips yourself (e.g. as a backup file), you decide where they go.

4. Permissions

  • Location (precise/approximate): for speed, direction and distance measurement.
  • Location in the background (foreground service): keeps an active recording counting while the screen is off or you switch apps. Only during an active trip.
  • Notifications: shows the ongoing recording as a notice.
  • Internet access and advertising ID: to retrieve advertising (section 8) and, if enabled, for crash reports (section 9). No internet connection is needed for speed, direction or distance measurement.

You can revoke any permission at any time in the Android settings. Without location access, speed and distance measurement will not work.

5. Legal basis

Where processing takes place, it is based on your consent given by granting the permissions (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) or on providing the function you explicitly requested (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Trips, vehicles and settings are not transmitted to SimpleCrafts Studio; the provider has no access to them.

6. Storage period and deletion

The data remains stored until you delete individual trips, delete a vehicle or uninstall the app. Uninstalling removes all of the app’s local data from the device.

7. Disclosure to third parties

SimpleCrafts Studio does not pass on your trips, vehicles and settings and does not receive them itself. For the advertising shown, device-related data is transmitted to Google (section 8); the same applies to crash reports if you have enabled them (section 9). Note: when downloading and updating via Google Play, Google itself processes device-related data in accordance with Google’s privacy policy; the provider of this app has no influence on this.

8. Advertising (Google AdMob)

The app is provided free of charge and is funded by advertising. It uses Google AdMob, a service of Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. Banner ads appear at the bottom of the trip log, the statistics, the vehicle comparison, the awards page and the settings. Full-screen ads appear only at natural breaks after you have finished something: after a trip has ended (saved or discarded), when you leave the statistics, after you have logged a refuel, when you leave the awards page and after a compass or tilt calibration has been completed successfully while no trip is being recorded. At most one full-screen ad is shown per minute. No full-screen ad is shown while a trip is running or paused, when you open or close the app, or during the tutorial; the speedometer screen has no banner ads. Without an internet connection, the banner space shows a notice about another app from SimpleCrafts Studio instead; the app displays this notice itself without transferring any data to Google or other third parties. Tapping it opens Google Play.

Google processes device-related data for this purpose, in particular your device’s advertising ID, the IP address and details about the device and the ad event. The provider of this app only receives aggregated reports without any personal reference.

The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), obtained through a dialog when the app is first launched. You can change or withdraw it at any time under Settings → Permissions → Advertising; withdrawal takes effect from the moment it is declared. Without consent you will not receive personalised advertising.

Data may be transferred to the USA. Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses apply in addition. You can reset or delete the advertising ID at any time in the Android settings. For more information see Google’s privacy policy.

9. Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)

The app can send crash reports to Firebase Crashlytics, a service of Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. This makes it possible to find faults that otherwise occur only on individual devices and would never come to the provider’s attention.

This transmission is switched off by default. It only starts once you enable Send crash reports under Settings → Permissions, and it stops as soon as you switch it off again; reports not yet sent are then discarded. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you may withdraw at any time with effect for the future.

A report contains the technical course of the crash (stack trace), device model, Android version, language, memory state, the app version and a randomly generated installation identifier. That identifier is not linked to any account or person and becomes invalid when the app is uninstalled.

Not transmitted are: your trips, locations, vehicles, notes, refuelling entries and settings. Your usage behaviour is not analysed – Firebase Analytics is deliberately not included.

Data may be transferred to the USA. Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses apply in addition. Google usually deletes reports after 90 days. For more information see Google’s privacy policy.

10. Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the rights to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection (Art. 15–21 GDPR), as well as the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority; the competent authority is the State Commissioner for Data Protection of Lower Saxony, Prinzenstraße 5, 30159 Hannover, Germany. Since the provider holds no trips, images, texts or settings, and enabled crash reports are linked only to a random installation ID, you exercise these rights in practice by deleting data and uninstalling the app. For the data processed by Google in connection with advertising and crash reports, please address these rights to Google (sections 8 and 9). If you have questions, you can reach the controller at Info@SimpleCrafts.de.

11. Changes to this policy

If the scope of the app changes – for example through further online features, purchase options or a change of advertising provider – this policy will be updated accordingly. The version published here, with the date given above, is the authoritative one.
