MirrorLens – Privacy Policy & Legal Notice

for the MirrorLens app · Deutsche Fassung

Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 11, 2026

The app “MirrorLens” processes your images exclusively on your device: camera images, recognised text and scanned codes are not transmitted – neither to SimpleCrafts Studio nor to third parties. The app stores your settings locally; if Android device backup is switched on, Android backs them up to your Google account (section 2). There are no user accounts and no analysis of your usage behaviour. The app connects to the internet for the advertising it displays (section 8), for technical diagnostics of Google’s ML Kit library (section 2) and – only if you explicitly enable it – for crash reports (section 9).

2. What data is processed and why

Camera image: While the app is open it displays the image of the front or rear camera – that is its very purpose as a mirror and as a magnifier. The image is processed and displayed exclusively in your device's working memory. It is not saved automatically and not transmitted. It is never involved in the advertising.

Saved images: Only if you explicitly tap “Save” while the image is frozen does the app store the displayed image as a photo in your gallery, in the album “MirrorLens”. These images are yours; the app does not change or delete them on its own. You can remove them at any time from the gallery or from the app's image history.

Text and code recognition: When you tap the button, the app searches the frozen or the live image for text as well as for barcodes, QR and Data Matrix codes. Both run entirely on the device: the recognition models (Google ML Kit) are included in the app; no internet connection is needed for recognition. Recognised content is displayed and – if you trigger it – copied to the clipboard. Image content and recognised text are not transmitted. According to Google, the ML Kit library sends technical diagnostic and usage data to Google (e.g. device model, Android and app version, a per-installation identifier, performance metrics and error codes) and may receive updates from Google.

Reading aloud: The read-aloud function passes the selected text to your device's speech output (text-to-speech). Which service that is and how it processes the data depends on your device settings and is outside the control of MirrorLens. If you do not want this, do not use the read-aloud function.

Settings: Your settings (zoom, light, filters, ring light, colour theme, language and so on) are stored in the app's own area on your device. They are removed when the app is uninstalled.

If Android device backup is switched on, Android backs up the app’s settings to your Google account (Google Drive). SimpleCrafts Studio has no access to this; the backup is managed solely by Android and Google and can be switched off in the Android settings. Photos stay in your device’s gallery and are not part of the app backup.

3. Permissions

  • Camera (CAMERA): strictly required, because the mirror and the magnifier are camera images. The permission is requested at first start; without it the app cannot fulfil its main function.
  • Internet access (INTERNET) and advertising ID (AD_ID): exclusively for retrieving the advertising (section 8) and, if enabled, for crash reports (section 9). No internet connection is needed for the mirror, the magnifier, text recognition, code recognition or reading aloud.
  • Storage access (WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE): only on Android 9 and older, and only so that saved images can be placed in the gallery. From Android 10 onwards it is no longer needed and therefore no longer requested.

The torch needs no permission of its own because it is controlled through the camera. The increased screen brightness applies only to the app's own window; your device's system setting is left untouched. You can revoke any permission at any time in the Android settings.

4. Legal basis

Insofar as personal data within the meaning of the GDPR is processed at all, this happens at your instigation in order to provide the function you requested (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR), or on the basis of your consent through granting the permissions and the advertising consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). Images, recognised text and settings are not transmitted to SimpleCrafts Studio; the provider has no access to them.

5. Retention and deletion

Settings remain stored until the app is uninstalled and are removed along with it. Images you saved yourself remain in your gallery until you delete them – they are not removed on uninstall, because they are in your gallery and belong to you.

6. Disclosure to third parties

SimpleCrafts Studio does not pass on your images, recognised text and settings and does not receive them itself. For the advertising displayed, device-related data is transmitted to Google (section 8); the same applies to technical diagnostics of the ML Kit library (section 2) and to crash reports if you have enabled them (section 9). Please note: when downloading and updating via Google Play, Google itself processes device-related data in accordance with the Google privacy policy; the provider of this app has no influence on that.

7. Children

The app is not specifically aimed at children. It does not ask for any personal details; which data is processed for advertising, text recognition and crash reports is described in sections 2, 8 and 9.

8. Advertising (Google AdMob)

The app is provided free of charge and is financed through advertising. It uses Google AdMob, a service of Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. Ads appear as a banner at the bottom edge of the screen and as a full-screen ad when text recognition starts. No advertising is shown on top of the camera image.

In doing so, Google processes device-related data, in particular the device's advertising ID, the IP address and information about the device and the ad event. The provider of this app receives only aggregated reports without any personal reference. Camera images and recognised texts are never involved.

The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). It is obtained via a dialog at the first start of the app. You can change or withdraw it at any time under Settings → Permissions → Advertising; the withdrawal takes effect from the time it is declared. Without consent you will not receive personalised advertising.

Data may be transferred to the USA. Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; in addition, the European Commission's standard contractual clauses apply. You can reset or delete the advertising ID at any time in the Android settings. For details see the Google privacy policy.

9. Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)

The app can send crash reports to Firebase Crashlytics, a service of Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. This makes it possible to find errors that otherwise occur only on individual devices and would never come to the provider's attention.

This transmission is switched off by default. It only begins once you enable the Send crash reports switch in the welcome dialog or under Settings → Permissions, and it ends as soon as you switch it off again; reports not yet sent are then discarded. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time with effect for the future.

A report contains the technical course of the crash (stack trace), device model, Android version, language, memory state, the app version and a randomly generated installation identifier. This identifier is not linked to any account or person and becomes invalid when the app is uninstalled.

Not transmitted are: camera images, saved images, recognised texts, scanned codes and your settings. No analysis of your usage behaviour takes place – Firebase Analytics is deliberately not included.

Transfer to the USA is possible. Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; in addition, the European Commission's standard contractual clauses apply. Reports are usually deleted by Google after 90 days. For details see the Google privacy policy.

10. Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the rights to information, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection (Art. 15–21 GDPR), as well as the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority; the competent authority is the State Commissioner for Data Protection of Lower Saxony, Prinzenstraße 5, 30159 Hannover, Germany. Since the provider holds no trips, images, texts or settings, and enabled crash reports are linked only to a random installation ID, you exercise these rights in practice by deleting data and uninstalling the app. For the data processed by Google in the context of advertising and crash reports, please address these rights to Google (sections 8 and 9). For questions you can reach the controller at Info@SimpleCrafts.de.

11. Important note on use

MirrorLens is not a medical device and does not provide a diagnosis. The app magnifies and illuminates – for example with inverted colours, which makes dark ticks on light skin stand out better. Whether a tick is actually there, whether a mole is of concern or whether medical help is needed is not assessed by the app. For health questions, please consult a doctor.

Text and code recognition also work automatically and can make mistakes. Always check important information – for instance on package inserts or packaging – against the original.

12. Changes to this policy

If the scope of the app changes – for example through further online functions, purchase options or a change of advertising service – this policy will be updated accordingly. The version published here with the date given above is the authoritative one.
